Swan City's well-kept wellness secret

Lakeland sits at the center of Florida — 32 miles east of Tampa, 49 miles west of Orlando — making it one of the state's fastest-growing cities with over 120,000 residents and a metro population approaching 375,000. Polk County, home to Publix Super Markets' world headquarters, is one of Florida's largest and most economically diverse counties, with more than 818,000 residents.

The city owes its identity to its 38 named lakes, but none more famous than Lake Morton, whose swans trace back to a royal gift. In 1957, a Lakeland couple wrote to Queen Elizabeth II after the local swan population was wiped out by disease and predators. Moved by the appeal, the Queen sent two Mute Swans from the royal flock on the Thames — and today roughly 54 descendants glide across the same water. Lake Morton is why locals proudly call this place Swan City.

Beyond the lakes, Lakeland draws visitors year-round for Detroit Tigers spring training at Joker Marchant Stadium, the SUN 'n FUN Aerospace Expo — the second-largest aviation show in the country at 200,000+ attendees — and the world's largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture at Florida Southern College.
